a kief catcher is the bottom chamber on a 4-piece grinder, sat under a fine screen. as you grind, the pollen (kief) falls through the screen and collects there. it builds up over time until you've got a decent amount saved. that's the main reason people go for a 4-piece over a 2-piece.
