what's the point of a roach in a joint?

it holds the shape, keeps the tip open so it draws properly, and stops loose bits reaching your mouth. it also lets you smoke it down without burning your fingers.
roach card or pre-rolled tips?

cards let you roll the size you want. pre-rolled tips save you the fiddle. both do the same job.
what size roach should i use?

match the roach to the paper you're rolling. slim tips suit regular papers, wider ones work better with king size. the bigger the tip, the easier the draw and the more air it lets through. it's worth keeping a couple of sizes in your kit so you're covered either way.
are filter tips the same as a roach?

pretty much. a filter tip and a roach do the same job, holding the end open and keeping bits out of your mouth. the two words get used interchangeably, so don't let it throw you. some tips are plain card, others are glass or activated carbon for a bit more filtering.
do filter tips actually filter anything?
